Gustave de Molinari (1819-1912), the author of countless books on a variety of topics, is one of the most stimulating figures of European liberalism. His claim that under some conditions all goods and services could in fact be provided by private companies, on the basis of a free and voluntary exchange, has remained daring and provocative up to this day. Yet, this study shows that de Molinari’s idea of the privatization of everything is not only rooted in radical theorizing but also in an understanding of man through numerous travels and a careful study of history.
